A Study of Anatomical Variations of Median Nerve Formation and Its Relation to the Arteries in the Axilla and Arm International Journal of Morphology
Samarawickrama,M. B.
Variations of the peripheral nerve formation, communication and distribution are clinically important because such knowledge can be used for proper planning of surgeries and evaluating effects of nerve injuries and clinical imaging. Median nerve is known to have several such variations. However studies done on median nerve in Sri Lankan subjects are spars. The objective of this study was to find out anatomical variations of the median nerve with regards to its variations in roots and relations to the arteries in the axilla and arm. The study was done using 98 upper limbs of 49 formalin fixed cadavers. They were dissected and anatomy of the median nerve formations was studied focusing its variations of the roots and relation to the arteries. Anatomical...

Absence of Musculocutaneous Nerve Associated with Variations of Distribution Patterns of the Median Nerve International Journal of Morphology
Zhang,Yong; Yang,Shengbo; Yang,Fangjiu; Xie,Peng.
Variations in the brachial plexus and the distribution patterns of its branches are not uncommon. A communicating branch, which is the most frequent variation, often arises from musculocutaneous nerve to median nerve. However, the branches arising from lateral cord of the brachial plexus and median nerve instead of musculocutaneous nerve are very rare. Detailed description of the abnormalities is important for surgical procedures. Our case study reports the musculocutaneous nerve was absent, a branch from the medial cord innervated the coracobrachialis muscle and two branches from the median nerve innervated the biceps and brachialis muscles, respectively. Moreover, the median nerve gave off the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve. This report provides...

Anomalous Branching Pattern of Lateral Cord of Brachial Plexus International Journal of Morphology
Das,Srijit; Paul,Shipra.
During routine dissection, an unusual formation of median nerve was detected in the right upper limb of a 55 year old male cadaver. The median nerve had an additional contribution from lateral cord. The two branches of the lateral cord designated as upper and the lower branches were observed at different levels. The upper branch was in close contact with the third part of the axillary artery and it crossed the vessel anteriorly to unite with a branch of the medial cord to form the median nerve. The median nerve thus formed was related medially to the axillary artery (instead of the normal position of being anterolateral). The median nerve descended below and was joined by an additional lower branch from the lateral cord. Interestingly, the ulnar nerve...

Course Pattern of the Muscular Branch of the Median Nerve in Sri Lankans Hand International Journal of Morphology
Senanayake,Kithsiri J; Salgado,Sujatha; Fernando,Ranil.
Transligamentous variant of the recurrent motor branch is having a higher risk of getting damage during both endoscopic and open carpal tunnel releases. The incidence of the transligamentous variant is about 7% to 80% world wide. This wide variation of the incidence could be due to the failure of identification of the distal edge of the flexor retinaculum from the obliquely oriented fascia that runs from the distal edge. We used two criteria to identify the distal edge; the abrupt change in the thickness of the flexor retinaculum and its colour change in cross section. The incidence of transligamentous variant is rare and the reported high incidence could be due to an error in identification of the distal edge of the flexor retinaculum as shown by Kosin...

Effect of skilled and unskilled training on nerve regeneration and functional recovery BJMBR
Pagnussat,A.S.; Michaelsen,S.M.; Achaval,M.; Ilha,J.; Hermel,E.E.S.; Back,F.P.; Netto,C.A..
The most disabling aspect of human peripheral nerve injuries, the majority of which affect the upper limbs, is the loss of skilled hand movements. Activity-induced morphological and electrophysiological remodeling of the neuromuscular junction has been shown to influence nerve repair and functional recovery. In the current study, we determined the effects of two different treatments on the functional and morphological recovery after median and ulnar nerve injury. Adult Wistar male rats weighing 280 to 330 g at the time of surgery (N = 8-10 animals/group) were submitted to nerve crush and 1 week later began a 3-week course of motor rehabilitation involving either "skilled" (reaching for small food pellets) or "unskilled" (walking on a motorized treadmill)...

Entrapment of the Median Nerves and Brachial Arteries in the Lower Arms Bilaterally and Additional Origin of Biceps brachii Muscle: Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Mahato,Niladri Kumar.
Neuro-vascular entrapments associated with variations observed in the origins of muscles in the arm are not uncommon. Though additional heads of biceps brachii muscle and extra fibres of brachialis muscles have been demonstrated earlier, bilateral additional heads of the biceps are rarely seen, especially with entrapment of the median nerve and the brachial arteries in both the arms. The present study reports conspicuous heads of the biceps brachii originating extensively from the medial inter-muscular septum, sharing its origin with the brachialis muscle. The extra origins of the muscle formed long musculo-aponeurotic tunnels. The tunnels measured eight centimeters in length extending from the lower arm to the cubital-fossa. Both the median nerve and the...

Incidence of Unusual Formation of the Median Nerve in Thai-Northeast Embalmed Cadavers International Journal of Morphology
Namking,Malivalaya; Chaiyamoon,Arada; Chaijaroonkhanarak,Wunnee; Khamanarong,Kimaporn; Woraputtaporn,Worawut; Iamsaard,Sitthichai.
This study aimed to investigate the incidence of unusual formation of the median nerve in Thai cadavers. Two hundred and ninety-two upper limbs were dissected and observed. The results showed that 5 out of 292 (1.71 %) arms had unusual splitting of median nerve that supplied the flexor arm muscles. Concomitantly, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent. In 4 out of 5 variant arms (80 % or 1.37 % of total upper limbs), each median nerve was unusually formed by 3 roots; the first and second roots were from lateral cord and the third one from medial cord. The union of the second lateral and medial roots to become a median nerve distantly extended in the arm. The second lateral roots gave off small muscular branches to the upper part of flexor arm muscles....

Pettian,Mariane; Iatecola,Amilton; Vecina,Cesar Adriano Dias; Viotto,Maria José Salete; Isayama,Ricardo Noboro; Palomari,Evanisi Teresa; da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues.
The neural compression syndromes peripheral upper limb are common in clinical medicine and the causes range from trauma and occupational factors. Technical evaluation manuals as neural tension at different positions of the upper limb as well as knowledge of the topography of the affected nerve are essential for accurate diagnosis. The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of the median nerve in different positions of the upper limb. Fifteen formalin-fixed cadavers were used for morphometric and topographic evaluation of the median nerve in different positions of the right upper limb. In all cases analyzed, the median nerve originated from the lateral and medial fascicles of the brachial plexus and attended by the arm and forearm in accordance...

Multiple Variations of the Branches of the Brachial Plexus with Bilateral Connections between Ulnar and Radial Nerves International Journal of Morphology
Ajayi,Nasirudeen Oladipupo; Lazarus,Lelika; Satyapal,Kapil Sewsaran.
During routine dissection of the upper limbs of a Caucasian male cadaver, multiple variations of the branches of the brachial plexus were observed. On the left side, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent and the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm were innervated by the median nerve. The median nerve was also formed from three roots viz; two from the lateral and one from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. On the right side, the musculocutaneous nerve contributed a long communicating branch to the median nerve in the distal half of the arm. There were also communicating branches between the ulnar and radial nerves in both limbs at the humeral level. The co-existence of these variations appears to be unique and has not been reported in the...

Normal median near nerve potential BJMBR
Marques Jr.,W.; Barreira,A.A..
In routine studies of sensory nerve conduction, only fibers e7 µm in diameter are analyzed. The late components which originate from thinner fibers are not detected. This explains why a normal sensory action potential (SAP) may be recorded in patients with peripheral neuropathies and sensory loss. In the present study we investigated the late component of the median SAP with a near nerve needle electrode technique in 14 normal volunteers (7 men and 7 women), aged 34.5 ± 14.8 years. The stimulus consisted of rectangular pulses of 0.2-ms duration at a frequency of 1 Hz with an intensity at least 6 times greater than the threshold value for the main component. Five hundred to 2000 sweep...

Stretch-induced nerve injury: a proposed technique for the study of nerve regeneration and evaluation of the influence of gabapentin on this model BJMBR
Machado,J.A.; Ghizoni,M.F.; Bertelli,J.; Teske,Gabriel C.; Teske,Guilherme C.; Martins,D.F.; Mazzardo-Martins,L.; Cargnin-Ferreira,E.; Santos,A.R.S.; Piovezan,A.P..
The rat models currently employed for studies of nerve regeneration present distinct disadvantages. We propose a new technique of stretch-induced nerve injury, used here to evaluate the influence of gabapentin (GBP) on nerve regeneration. Male Wistar rats (300 g; n=36) underwent surgery and exposure of the median nerve in the right forelimbs, either with or without nerve injury. The technique was performed using distal and proximal clamps separated by a distance of 2 cm and a sliding distance of 3 mm. The nerve was compressed and stretched for 5 s until the bands of Fontana disappeared. The animals were evaluated in relation to functional, biochemical and histological parameters. Stretching of the median nerve led to complete loss of motor function up to...

Third Head of Biceps Brachii Muscle, Associated with Musculocutaneous and Median Nerve Bilateral Communication and with a Communicating Branch Between Median Nerve Roots International Journal of Morphology
Cerda,Aladino.
Both biceps brachii muscle anatomical variations and the presence of communicating branches between the musculocutaneous nerve and the median nerve are common, and have clinical significance due to their connections and vulnerability. A case found during a routine dissection of the upper limb of a male cadaver is described, in which unilateral presence of a third head of the biceps brachii muscle coexists associated to a bilateral communication of the musculocutaneous nerve with the median nerve, and a unilateral communicating branch between the roots of median nerve. The morphological features and the prevalence of the case are presented, besides the discussion of its clinical significance.

Unusual Relation of the Median Nerve with the Accessory Head of the Biceps Brachii Muscle: An Original Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Mas,Nuket; Pelin,Can; Zagyapan,Ragiba; Bahar,Hakan.
During the laboratory dissection of the brachial region and the arm, an abnormal relation of median nerve with the accessory head of biceps brachii muscle has been observed unilaterally on the right upper limb of a male cadaver. Whereas the short and long heads have their normal origin, additional-excess third head originated from the anteromedial surface of the superior part of the humerus. Some fibers of this accessory head on the medial side arise from the deep fascia surrounding the brachialis muscle. The fibers then cross the median nerve superficially before joining the third head which has inserted into a common tendon together with the long and short heads. To have information of such variations is of importance either for anatomists or clinicians...
